I don't think anyone currently dealing with robots thinks much of the Webster definition, which applies to Star Wars type robots. One of the trade groups (quoted in this month's IEEE Spectrum) defined robots as machines that could move things around; a sort of intuitive generalization to include computer controlled arms and mobile robots.
