              ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MEDICINE GROUP

                          Research Assistant

A post is available immediately at the 1B level on the Alvey-funded
'Harvey' project. The objectives of this project are to design and
implement a prototype model-based system which would enable a hospital
physician to explore his or her understanding of complex cases in the
domain of cardiology. The specific research issues are:

The combination of different kinds of knowledge and meta-
          knowledge.

The construction of detailed qualitative causal models of cardiac
physiology expressed as a network of constraints.

The use of assumption based constraint propagation in this net-
          work.

The investigation of non-quantitative approaches to uncertainty.

The ability to represent and reason with changes over time.

The Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Group currently has eight
members; close contact is maintained with the other AI groups at
Sussex. Programming within 'Harvey' is in POPLOG, running on SUN
     workstations.

Applicants would preferably have a masters degree in AI (or some vari-
ant thereof) but a relevant first degree in Computing or AI would also
be considered. In would be possible for the person selected to regis-
ter for a part time D.Phil.

Anyone wishing to be considered for this post should write as soon as
possible including CV and names of referees, to:
