[net.college] Advising students

spaf@gatech.UUCP (06/23/83)

[I didn't realize that net.college was here, so this got posted to
net.general too. My apologies for duplication of articles.]

(If this request does not directly apply to you, would you
please forward it to the appropriate persons?)

Georgia Tech's School of Information and Computer Science
has a current undergraduate enrollment of over 700. Like many
other institutions, advising is a difficult and time-consuming
task. In particular, it is difficult to advise students about
the potential for graduate study. The task is made more difficult
when you consider how attractive offers from industry are, especially
to computer science students. I'm attempting to organize
a special advisement session for our undergraduates to help
increase their awareness of the benefits and availability
of graduate study. I'd like the session to include:
-- information on financial aid including assistantships
-- GRE's and other required tests
-- how and when to apply
-- degree requirements at various schools
	-- co-op programs
-- how to get more information

I'm planning this session for the beginning of our fall
quarter (mid-September). I would appreciate it if you would
contact me if you have any information which might be useful
in this effort. I would especially be interested in hearing
if anyone out there has conducted anything similar.

Additionally, I'd like to get some materials for student reference.
Our ACM chapter maintains a library, part of which will be devoted to
graduate school references. If you have any information
on your graduate programs, including course catalogs, info
on equipment and faculty, and where to write for more information,
would you please send it to me? I would especially
appreciate up-to-date course catalogs and degree requirements.
My US Mail address is:
	ACM Advisement
	c/o Gene Spafford
School of Information and Computer Science
	Georgia Institute of Technology
	Atlanta, GA 30332

If you would like equivalent information about Georgia Tech's
graduate program, please send me your US mail address and
I will send you our department brochure and some postage-paid
cards which can be used to obtain applications.

Thanks for your assistance.
