The most common term I've heard (at least in the computer industry) for technophobe is "luddite". The term refers to Ned Ludd who led an abortive rebellion against the mechanization of the weaving mills in England at the start of the industrial revolution. With regard to allowing calculators to do our arithmetic for us: When was the last time anybody out there extracted a cube root by hand? A square root? Why? About Asimov's idea of people flying missiles: Pidgeons are much cheaper than people and can probably do a better job. They were experimentally trained for the purpose in the 50's by B.F. Skinner, though never actually used. Of course, technology has passed Asimov's old idea by and computers are now much cheaper than people anyway. Finally, just try to imagine running the equivalent of usenet through the U.S. Post Office (-:. -- The Polymath (Jerry Hollombe) Opinions expressed here are my own and Transaction Technology, Inc. unrelated to anyone else's whether living, 3100 Ocean Park Blvd. dead, or imaginary.
