[net.college] College Computer Resources

jim@mit-athena.ARPA (Jim Fulton) (12/10/84)

Several days ago I submitted a brief overview of the resources at MIT available
to interested undergraduates. My posting was a result of the "yale!kaufman"'s
inquiry of the day before. I would like to add my own request:

I would like to here summaries from other schools on the net, especially

uc berkeley and colleges with ~200+ undergrad EECS
	stanford majors per graduating class
	cmu
	cal tech
	penn
	penn state
	lehigh
	uc san diego

Also, if your school has an interesting solution (or idea) concerning
computer resources at the undergraduate level please chime in.

Since you requested the information so nicely, I have decided to write
about UCSD. As usual, anyone taking a class that needs computer
access get computer accounts. The following resources are open to
the Undergrad who is attending a computer class here at UCSD.
Let it be noted that there are a LOT of computer classes that have
nothing to do with Computer Science and Engineering. And also, the
computers that are owned and operated by individual departments are
allocated to students who are in those departments.

UCSD Computer Center
3 - Vax 11/780
5 - Vax 11/750
2 - Pyramid 90x
2 - Catt Unix systems (PDP-11's)
1 - Sun Microsystem

UCSD Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
1 - Vax 11/780
Misc Micro Computers

UCSD Psychology and Linguistics Dept.
10+ Sun Microsystems with workstations.

The Computer Center here at UCSD has come up with a nice system for
Undergraduates. Anyone who has a student ID can get a free $100.00
"Student Literacy Account" on one of the computer center machines.

Now, its not a huge amount, but it helps.

Also, students can get "Research" accounts through the individual
departments at UCSD. These are functionally unlimited, but you need
to have a professor give you one of these.
