[net.college] Fall Break

micci@nvuxg.UUCP (D M Dennee) (11/15/85)

Thanks to Eric Holtman of U. of Virginia for deciding to come up
with some topics! I've still been thinking (between trying to
do some actual work.)

Congrats on U.of V's 150th year. (Wow...colleges have been around
THAT long???)

I'd love to discuss football, but with our good old Rutgers University
team...I get a little disgusted. Don't think we'll ever make top 10.

topic 3) R.U. doesn't have a fall break either. no vacation until
T-day, and no "real" break till December. Are there actually
schools that get a Fall Break?

OK, I'll pipe in -> when I was at Cornell we didn't have a fall break but
in my senior year they decided to schedule one for the following year.
Chalk another one up for Murphy!

I have an interesting item to throw out to net.college -> several schools I
have come across (including Rutgers and NYU at least at one time) have their
Fall Semester finals AFTER a Christmas/New Year holiday break. This always
struck me as a horrible cross to have to bear during the "joyous" holiday
season. Are there schools out there that still organize their schedule this
way? Do people like it or hate it? I always had great plans of getting lots
of work done during Thanksgiving and never opened a book! I'm sure the same
would have happened to me if my Fall semester extended over the holidays into
January.

At harvard (I am a junior CS major) we have finals in the second half
of January. While this does cut down on our winter vacation (usually 2
weeks or even shorter), we do have a reading period in the beginning of
January to "piece together all of the material of the term." In theory,
it is a very good idea. We finish classes before break, and come back
to 1-1/2 - 2 weeks of study, followed by (usually) 3-4 exams over a 2
week period. In practice, however, reading period often turns into a
"let's catch up" period for Professor's who have not **9or never planned
to) finish the syllabus on time. It also has turned into a popular time
for term papers, projects, etc.

All in all, though, I like the idea. We have enough pressure with
other things before the holidays, and I've never even felt the
compulsion to open books (although I took them home freshman year) over
the vacation. In the Spring, we have the same situation (reading period
and exam period) except for the lack of a major vacation before them.

Does anyplace else have a system like this?

As a student at Washington State University (the one who can't make it
to the Rose Bowl but keeps the Huskies from making it :-) I agree that
continuing Fall semester after Christmas is disgusting. During my first
two years here, the administration had not yet seen the light, so we started
in September and ended in January. However, last year they adjusted the
school year so we finished before Christmas. IT'S GREAT!!!

And no, you don't study over break even with the threat of finals just
three weeks away!

Yup, there sure are. Stevens Institute of Technology
had a whopping 2 day break back there somewhere... And Princeton
U. apparently got a whole week off.
