[net.college] Abolishing Student Government

lydgate@reed.UUCP (Lady Godiva) (12/06/85)

In 1964 the Reed College Student Council dissolved itself-
primarily as a political ploy to force the administration to
compromise. Students felt they were being ignored. Apparently,
students just refused to discuss any concerns with administrators
until they got as guarantee that they would have a real voice in
running the college.
Of course, the Griffin was reborn- in the form of a Student
"Caucus", which is now indistinguishable from a Student Council.

BTW, last month 17 students took over the President's Office
for a weekend, calling for Reed's "total divestment" from South Africa,
and demanding an emergency meeting of the Trustees to discuss
divestment. Any other colleges out there on the net have similar
experiences?
