The following was published in the Georgia Tech Technique under the headline
" Brother Jim Does the Heavy Metal Scene":

by James Bridges, News Staff Writer
Last Thursday, WREK aired a taped edition of the program called
"Wreckage" from midnight until two in the mroning which featured Brother
Jim as a guest personality. The program, hosted by Carl Carlsson and
Donald Crafts, normally runs 1.5 hours of heavy metal, but this time the
hosts decided to have a guest speaker.
"I thought it would be really cool to get Jim on our shows because
we like to do crazy things", commented Carlsson.
Jim Gilles (Brother Jim) was on campus the week of February 17 giving
his unique gospel of how he became a Christian when Carlsson asked him to
do the show. "I told him that we play this sinful rock and roll music on
our show and that this would be his chance to reach all of those sinners."
Gilles was schedules to prerecord the program for the February 20 show,
but, "He didn't show up for the taping session, so we had to do it a week
late," said Carlsson. The evangelist agreed to do the program even though
it features the kind of music he describes as "devil worshop."
Currently the station runs a promotional tape for the "Wreckage" show
that begins with a two minute harangue by Jim denouncing the music: "God
said take thee away from the noise of thy songs and here on 'Wreckage' they
play the music which glorifies the devil."
The program consisted of a managerie of heavy metal tunes by Venom,
Megadeath, and Slayer, intermittently interruped by Carlsson's discussion
and Jim's religious insights and general condemnations. At times Carlsson
heightened the discussion by playing songs such as "Religious Vomit" by the
Dead Kennedys.
One of the first things Jim did as he entered the studio was peruse the
record selection and discuss the fate of the bands he once listened to.
When Carlsson played a song by Frank Zappa called "Miss Pinkie," Jim remarked
'I saw colors coming out of the speaker when I heard this song -- when I was
a sinner and on drugs."
Sometime soon Brother Jim and his ministry will be the subject of an
article in Rolling Stone. Gilles even speculated about doing the David
Letterman show.
The reaction at the station was sarcastic, and most did not take the
show seriously. Jon Kincaid, music director of WREK, said "What can you
say about Brother Jim? He came; he saw; he X-ed our employees for double
emphasis."
