[net.med] protein floaters

tiberio (01/16/83)

Ok here goes....... For as long as I can remember I have been able
to see the protein floaters in my eye. Recently I have noticed perhaps
a ten fold increase in their number. My question to the net is, could
this increase be caused by 3 years of low level x-ray exposure from VDT's?
Also is there anyone out there that has developed facial rashes (not the
big H) since working around VDT's?

Regarding the question of these things being exacerbated by "low-level x-ray
exposure from VDT's": NO! At least, that's the opinion of a very experienced
electrical engineer of my acquaintance. According to him, the circuitry of
a VDT runs at voltages that are simply \too low/ to produce any x-rays. I'll
grant the possibility that some other form of electromagnetic radiation is
responsible, but I have never seen any claims that anything below the
microwave level (VDTs shouldn't be producing any of that either) is injurious
to human health.

There have been a number of cases in recent years where VDTs were implicated
(accused, anyway) in cases of unusually high levels of miscarriages. The
aforementioned electrical engineer, who works for GE, was dispatched to one
of their plants to check out even the remote possibility that the VDTs were
at fault; he couldn't find anything at all. (Do you suppose it's actually
the high-frequency whine that you can hear from some VDTs [and televisions]
that's really the culprit? It sounds crazy, but perhaps it's crazy enough
to be true.)
