[net.med] need advice on dealing with psychiatric hospital

jvenner@wateng.UUCP (Jason P. Venner) (09/10/83)

I have a friend who was committed to a psychiatric hospital
ward. This person does not need (I think so anyway) to be there.
It is however not apparent how to get her out of the clutches of
the burocrazy/administration/whatever who seem intent on keeping
her doped till hell freezes over.

Please help, any advice on how to get her out would be
greatly welcomed.
reply by mail (of course)

Where was this friend committed to psychiatric hospital against their and
your wishes -- the USSR?

I believe that in our enlightened age with concern for human
dignity, people are ADMITTED to hospitals for psyciatric care,
not COMMITTED. I have a friend who voluntarily, in
cooperation with her psyciatrist, admitted herself to a hospital
for psyciatric care. People who reported that she was
committed did her a great personal disservice. Her voluntary
action took a lot of guts on her part, and she deserves to
be commended, not demeaned, for her action.
