[net.med] Le Forte I Osteotomy

kathleen@ihuxw.UUCP (09/10/83)

To all interested persons:

A Le Forte I Osteotomy is a type of surgery which involves the
cutting of the upper jaw bone to correct an abnormal bite (in my
case). It involves a somewhat long time in surgery (3-1/2 to 6-1/2 hours)
and then the recovery period of 6 to 8 weeks of being wired shut.
The jaw is not broken as some people believe, but actually cut
and moved around with spaces that are created during the movement
being filled in with osseous bone material (I had my upper jaw moved
forward 1/4-inch and the resulting spaces were filled in with bone
pieces from my hip. An orthopedist TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSperforms the surgery on the hip
to remove the required amount of bone pieces (similar to toothpick-size)
at the same time that the oral and maxillofacial surgeon is doing
the surgery on the jaw.
