I've gotten only three responses to my query about using contact lenses to assist color vision. Why isn't there more interest out there? More than half of the 10% of the male population which is colorblind can potentially benefit from this technique! To test the idea out, I tried taping a piece of red plastic to one lens of my glasses, and blocking peripheral light with black tape. The results were WONDERFUL (as I'm sure my traveling companion/color interpreter will attest). For the first time I realized that dead (brown) leaves really stand out against grass or other leaves on the trees! That pistachios really are red! That red traffic lights and brake signals really attract most people's attention! For the first time, blue and purple looked different! Whether or not I spend a bunch on the more convenient contact lens solution, just playing with the red plastic for two days has given me "a whole new outlook on life". Try it! Has anyone else out there tried the X-CHROME lens? The one actual user who replied to me stopped using it after a year, in part because his lens got scratched and was uncomfortable. Others warned me that I might get headaches, but I haven't found that to be a problem. Do people get headaches from wearing just one contact lens? Come on, the net is just about the only way to reach a good cross-section of people to discuss this! Neal McBurnett, ihnp4!druxv!neal.
