[net.med] barbituates and drowning

:
Barbituates are used to reduce brain metabolism in anoxia
victims. The theory, based on animal studies, is that brain
cells are much less likely to die when their metabolism is
artificially maintained at a much reduced level following a
severe anoxic insult.

Naturally, coma appears as a side effect of the reduced brain
metabolism caused by the barbituates.

on the subject of drowning does anyone know anything
about the use of Hydergine* in drowning victims.
I have read that this drug by Sandoz is quite an
effective one for this purpose. Apparently
it stops free radicals from running around in the brain
and causing havoc. It does this because it is a very
effective antioxidant and thus prevents the formation
of free radicals in the blood stream.  Sounds interesting;
anyone know anything about this??
