[net.med] review of another vision therapy book

I have another book on vision therapy called "Improve Your Sight
Without Glasses" (no author). It is published by Science of Life
Books, 4-12 Tattersalls Lane, Melbourne, Victoria 3000. ISBN 0 909911
66 5.

It is only 60 pages and is quite straightforward. It says that eyes
are not unlike other muscles and should be treated similarly. In
particular, it says that most people abuse their eyes (eye strain)
and that glasses are crutches.

Eyes can be improved by exercise (which are given), diet and general
good health of the body (physical and mental). Vitamins are
discussed. Specific ailments including cataracts are discussed. An
eye chart is included.

Most of this book is common sense, so don't be surprised if you buy it
and say "hey, I knew that before". The point is that most people
stare at ttys all day, with glare, at the wrong distance, unblinking,
when our eyes are already tired. We have terrible diets. Our sleep
is irregular. Exercise nil. Our poor emotional state strains our
physical state.

I wish I could tell you this book works, but you know how it is...
(see previous paragraph, if you don't). As long as I can read the dim
characters on my tty, my eyes are ok enough. (Hey, hey, I'll just
crank up the brightness a little and lean a little closer.) One
person who was successful with this (Bates) method is Aldous Huxley
who wrote "The Art of Seeing" in gratitude to Dr. Bates. Huxley was
almost completely blind and used braille at 16 due to opacities of the
cornea, hyperopia and astigmatism. After following the Bates method,
"within a couple of months" writes Huxley, "I was reading without
glasses and, what was better still, without strain and fatigue".
