[net.med] Question, does Nutrasweet cause depression?

wjt@hound.UUCP (Bill TAGGART) (09/21/84)

In the recent discussions on migraine headaches, Nutrasweet
was mentioned as a possible cause. I have also heard that
it may cause depression. Has anyone heard this also or
seen any articles about the side-effects of Nutrasweet?
I would appreciate any references to articles.

Thank you, in advance.

PS: I am new to USENET, this is my first attempt at
sending a message, so I hope it works.

There was an extensive article last month in Common Cause (the magazine put
out by Common Cause, a citizen's lobbying group - Nader style) on
Nutra-sweet. I havn't finished it and don't know if it is available in
libraries. They concentrated mostly on the political aspects, saying
that the FDA rushed it through without sufficient testing, as a demonstration
of the Reagan administration's policy against over-regulation. Also,
the one company that makes it (Searle ?) did a lot of lobbying and pulled
a few strings to quicken their fortune. The article quoted all kinds of
prominant doctors who say that Nutra-sweet will play with your
hormone/brain-chemical system and can affect your mood, emotions, etc.
