Does anyone have information on the surgerical procedure Radical Keratotomy which is used to correct nearsightedness? It is a new and still investi- gational operation which consists of making series of from six to sixteen non-perforating micro-incisions into the cornea. The patient is under a local anestesia when done and is treated on an outpatient basis. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone on the NET has had it done or knows of someone who, if they would post what their experience has been and if it they consider the procedure safe and successful. Thanks in advance for any comments.

> Does anyone have information on the surgerical procedure Radical Keratotomy > which is used to correct nearsightedness?... A friend of mine had this surgery and had very good results. He works for IBM (systems engineer/marketing) and their insurance company reclassified the surgery as non-experimentive so he got it done for free. In fact, just about everybody in the sales office that wore glasses got the surgery done for free. Aparently, nobody had problems with the surgery. Some people had better results than others; that is a couple of the people still needed some eyesight correction after the surgery, but the needed correction was much less. Most of the people could throw away their glasses/contacts. They do it one eye at a time and patch up the eye for a few days after the surgery is done. There is some discomfort, but understand it's not terribly painful. -- bob P.S. If you can figure out how to mail to IBM's VNET (first tell me how) then mail to him directly at SCURREY@DALVMIC1 and ask him how the procedure went. -- Bob Tomlinson - dspo!tomlin@LANL or ucbvax!unmvax!lanl!dspo!tomlin Los Alamos National Laboratory - E-10/Data Systems Los Alamos, New Mexico - (505) 667-8495

There was a recent TV piece on this topic. One of the current showcases of Soviet medicine is an assembly line clinic in which radial keratotomies are performed. Should be lots of safety/efficacy data available, although perhaps not published in English. -- ______ Russ Herman / \ {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!aesat!rwh @( ? ? )@ ( || ) The opinions above are strictly personal, and ( \__/ ) do not reflect those of my employer (or even \____/ possibly myself an hour from now.)
