[net.med] Info Needed: Optometrists vs Ophthalmologists

dxa@bentley.UUCP (DR Anolick) (01/31/85)

I posted this a few weeks ago, but I just recently found out that
that it was lost to at least some sites. (I was wondering why I
got zero responses.) If you have already seen this, sorry about
that. Hoping for responses soon.

Previously posted(?) message:

I don't read net.med, so forgive me if this has been covered
before. I am in the need of finding an eye doctor, and I am very
confused about what I should be looking for. According to the
dictionary, an Oculist or Ophthalmologist is a physician who
specializes in diseases of the eye. Optometrist applies more
narrowly to one skilled in testing the eyes and prescribing
corrective lenses. And Optician is one who makes or sells
optical goods.

I have asked various people for there opinions about who to see,
and for every two people I can get three opinions. It seems that
a lot of people base there opinions on personal bad experience
with a certain type of doctor. For example, one person who said
they preferred an Optometrist also said that they had a bad
experience with an Ophthalmologist. And of course the opposite
is true.

My personal experience is that I have seen only an Optometrist
for the past few years, and have not been very happy with the
results. I just recently moved, which is why the question of who
to see has come up now.

So, could the net people please MAIL me your suggestions about
what I should look for in an eye doctor? Send me your opinions
of optometrists, ophthalmologists, vision "stores" or any other
options that you are aware of. Again, since I don't read
net.med, so please MAIL me your suggestions, and I will post a
summary of the responses.

Thanks in advance,
