[net.med] Cortizone Nasal Spray

References:

Recently, an ENT specialist told me that chronic nasal blockage
was causing my frequent sinus infections. The blockage stemmed from
a combination of allergies, nasal polyps, and a slightly deviated septum.
She said that surgery might not be necessary if we could remove that part
of the blockage caused by allergy symptoms.

To alleviate the allergy-based swelling, she prescribed "Nasalide",
a nose spray containing cortizone, which I take twice a day.
She said that I shouldn't experience any of the terrible side effects
associated with cortizone treatment, since a very small dose applied
directly to the nasal passages is much more effective than even a very
large dose taken orally (cortizone taken orally will be distributed
throughout the entire body).

Has anyone had experience with Nasalide, or something similar drug?
Can long term use (e.g. twice a day for 50 years) cause any problems?

*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR NOSE SPRAY ***

I've been using Nasalide for 2-3 years now. I haven't seen any side
effects -- although who knows about long term use.
For me it has been a miracle drug -- My sinuses used to be completely
blocked due to environmental allergies (pollen, etc.). Years of allergy
shots did nothing for me. After using Nasalide for one week
it was as if I was cured of *all* symptoms!!!

P.S. My allergist never mentioned Nasalide -- *I* had to ask *him*.
After all, he was making $10/week off me from the shots.
      He no longer is.

I have used both Nasalide and Beconase. I am allergic to most tree
pollens and grasses and molds. The beconase afforded me a small
amount of relief but not worth the large expense ($16/month).
The nasalide had a definite side effect. I would get nauseous when
I used it and remain so for half and hour after each use. Also the
upset got worse with each application. Needless to say, I gave it
up. My allergist was very disappointed since he thinks it is a very
useful drug. Now I control the hassles of my allergies with
shots and anti-histamines (I am on a constant supply of them and
so they don't make me sleepy after a few days of taking them).
This does not stop the allergies but it does leave me functional.
