[net.med] What is Herbalife? *URGENT*

judith@proper.UUCP (Judith Abrahms) (11/02/85)

A while back, someone posted to this group that Herbalife had recently set a
record by causing more deaths than the Cambridge Diet.

My mother and sister are enthusiastically getting ready to get into Herbalife.
They're open to arguments, but since I know nothing about Herbalife I've only
been able to ask them to hold off while I check it out on net.med.

If anyone knows how this preparation/regimen works, please send mail right
away. Any information at all, good or bad, will be greatly appreciated.

A report showed that the main effect of the Herbalife products was that
of a laxative.

A few months ago, Consumer Reports did a feature article on quackery.
Herbalife was predominantly mentioned.

According to the article, Herbalife's ingrediants consist mainly of natural
substances that	all have a laxative effect. Not only is taking large quantities
of laxatives for extended periods of time very bad for your body, it's an
awfully expensive way just to take a laxative.

I thought Herbalife was under investigation by the FDA. It's a real shame
people fall for ploys like that.

(BTW--I'd recommend looking up the article--very informative reading).

Herbalife is a pyramid marketing scheme, in the congressional hearings
their ``distributors handbook'' was introduced as evidence. This book
makes a batch of medical claims, and appears to be aimed at the
chronically ill. The formula is a kludge of ``famous'' herbs with no
precedent in anyone's traditional medicine. Some of the substances
counteract the effects of the others. The hearing transcript should
help convince anyone to avoid this stuff.

I'd like to thank all the people who sent me mail on the subject of Herbalife.
I've summarized the responses to my mother, who has promised not to get into
it.

Best,
