[net.med] Lung Cancer drops in Men

werner@aecom.UUCP (Craig Werner) (12/04/85)

For the first time since statistics have been kept, the lung cancer
incidence has dropped in White males.
Why? Easy! The incidence of smoking in white males has fallen
precipitously since the Surgeon General's report of 1964, and with Lung
Cancer taking 15-20 years to show itself, the effects are just starting to
show now.
The reverse happened earlier in this century. Cigarettes started
being smoked by white men in the early 1900s. Lung Cancer started becoming
common in the 1920s and 30s. Women and Blacks started smoking after WW II,
their Lung Cancer rates continue to climb. [Yep, you've come a lung way, baby]

So, for those who doubted that quitting smoking now will reduce your
chance of developing disease later, here's more evidence to support that
claim and hopefully weaken your resistance.

And for those of you who have already quit - my congratulations.
You have been vindicated by history for making the right choice.
