Here is the situation: a friend has recently had knee surgery. (The ligament on the outside of the knee was cut so that the knee cap could move to the center of the knee joint where it belonged...) This has resulted in the knee and ankle swelling some, post surgery. The surgery was done about 2 weeks ago. The swelling and redness of the knee has gone down some, the stitches are out, and the incisions are healing nicely. 1). Why does the ankle persist in swelling. It was the knee that was worked on. Is the lymph system being clogged by the knee swelling? 2). What is the correct regimine of ice packs/warm packs? The physical therapist is saying ice until the swelling is gone. In first aid I learned ice packs when a new injury, warm packs when an old one. Isn't two weeks enough time to cross over from acute to chronic swelling? I though ice slowed the swelling process, but once it was there, heat helped it to go away. What's the real scoop? Or is this one of those things where everyone has an opinion, but no one has any facts... Thanks, -- E.
