Two questions have been asked of me in relation to some recent postings I made to this newsgroup about soft contact lenses and contact lens correction of astigmatism. 1) Where to get "saline tablets"- These are available in most drugstores in the contact lens solution area. One brand name I know of is Blairex- they make salt tablets as well as the bottle to prepare it in. Other companies offer it also- Bausch & Lomb used to. Be careful though- the tablets are available in difference sizes (ie. ~130 mg , 250 mg). To get the proper saline concentration necessary for comfort, the bottle size must be marked for the amount of water corresponding to the tablet size. It is also recommended to prepare fresh saline each day, since there are no preservatives. 2) Why toric back surface lenses may be less comfortable- Some rigid contact lenses have a toric back surface to get a better fit on the cornea, with less rocking. Then each blink, which tries to rotate the lens, tends to push the the curves of the "keying" cylinders against each other. This leads to more epithelial contact, and hence, less comfort (more lens awareness). Some people are not really bothered by this, though. -- ==================================================================== David Robins, M.D. Smith-Kettlewell Institute of Visual Sciences 2232 Webster St; San Francisco CA 94115 415/561-1705 {ihnp4,qantel,dual}!ptsfa!ski!dr The opinions expressed herein do not reflect the opinion of the Institute!
