The reason I am posting this article is because I have a non-debilitating but rather unusual disorder and I am curious to know if anyone else has it or knows someone who has. I think I have what the Merck manual describes as "Fructose Intolerance". Since birth, I haven't been able to tolerate any food that contains fructose including all fruits, most vegetables, and anything with sucrose (all "sweets"). By not tolerating it I mean that if I eat it, I either throw up or feel faint, hot, and go white and shakey. If I smell or taste it I feel nauseous. This means that even things with sugar substitutes taste horrible to me. The Merck manual mentions that absence of cavities characterizes this disorder which is also true in my case. Other than the occasional mild bout with scurvy in my childhood I have suffered no ill effects (except mild embarassment at dinners where I receive a plate of food that I can't eat). Needless to say, I take vitamins. I have not researched it to any great extent. My doctor claimed I would grow out of it (I didn't) and a Biochemistry professor thought it rather interesting but didn't really offer any more information. I have no desire to change the condition. I am just curious to know if anyone else in this world has it and has any more information. -- Lynn Baker New Media Technologies ..decvax!microsoft!ubc-vision!winston!gordon ..ihnp4!alberta!ubc-vision!winston!gordon
