A new source of chest pain that could be called "Beeper Battery
Burning" is described by 4 physicians from Chicago's Rush-Presbyterian-
St Luke's Medical Center in a letter published in the New England Journal
of Medicine,
The four describe a 36-yr old male intern who "experienced an intense,
burning pain in the left part of the chest" while running to aid in a
resuscitation of a coronary case. The doctor felt his chest and noticed his
shirt pocket was warm and producing smoke.
"On further investigation," said Dr. Jane Ramp and colleagues, "he
discovered that the reserve battery for his beeper was resting between two
metallic pens and, by completing a circuit , was generating heat. Removal of
the battery relieved the chest pain."

This reminds me of a problem that the Seattle Police were confronted
with a few years ago. When their communications equipment was updated, the
handie talkies were replaced with models that plug into the comm. console
in the patrol cars. The battery contacts are exposed and embedded slightly
in the base of the handie talkie. Some of the officers found this out the
hard way when they put the unit in their pocket with their supply of spare
bullets. The first couple of times it occurred, the officers actually thought
they were being shot at! Fortunately, I don't recall any serious injuries,
just a few extra ventilation holes in their trousers.

    Oh yes, the obligatory joke....
