[net.med] Risk blows off fast as smoke

[I meant to post this months ago.]

By way of introduction, you do realize that the number one cause of premature
death in smokers is not lung cancer, but rather heart attack. As a matter of
fact, next to the big three (high Blood pressure, high cholesterol, and
cigarette smoking), all other risk factors for heart attack are insignificant.

Continuing:
Smokers' unusally high risk of heart attack eases rapidly after they
quit and it almost dissapears if they stay away from cigarets for two years,
a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine concluded.
"The evidence of this and earlier studies provides strong support for
the surgeon general's new message on cigararet packages, which says, "Quitting
smoking now greatly reduces serious risk to your health."

Do a smoker a favor: pass this information on.
