I made a mistake in my abbreviations I used before. An ophthalmologist (physician) can be either a medical doctor (M.D.) or a doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) who has undergone the specialty training. An optometrist is abbreviated O.D. In most states, medication prescriptions can be written only by an M.D. or D.O. In some states now, O.D.'s can treat certain eye problems, and prescribe? medications. In all states, all of the above can write prescriptions for eye glasses ans contact lenses. SORRY FOR ANY CONFUSION I MAY HAVE CAUSED IN THE 1788 POSTING. -- ==================================================================== David Robins, M.D. Smith-Kettlewell Institute of Visual Sciences 2232 Webster St; San Francisco CA 94115 415/561-1705 {ihnp4,qantel,dual}!ptsfa!ski!dr The opinions expressed herein do not reflect the opinion of the Institute!
