About 2 1/2 weeks ago, I sprained my ankle playing tennis. This had never happened to me before. When it happened, I kept it elevated and iced (10 mins on and 10 mins off) for about 12 hours (till bedtime). The next day I kept it elevated. For the next week, all my walking on it was aided my an elastic ankle brace. After the 2nd day, it got better very fast, but it has yet to be 100%. It is now 2 1/2 weeks later, and it is still a bit sore and slightly swollen. I can walk and run almost normally on it, but certain positions are still uncomfortable. My question is: did I treat it properly, and if so, is there still anything else I can do to help its present condition? Is this normal? And how long before it returns to its original form? -- NAME: Evan L. > I sprained my ankle playing tennis... My question is: did I treat it > properly... I'm not an MD, and this being one of the few newsgroups with bona-fide experts attending (no pun attended), you'll likely get some better answers. Now, disclaimer aside, here is some sage advice I got from a sports physician. For any athletic injury of uncertain (but obviously not critical) extent, he said you can't go wrong with RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. If you have a problem that needs medical attention, you'll find out for sure within a few days, and meanwhile you won't do any harm. So, it sounds like you did the right things. This advice may be over simple, but it's the kind of memorable summary which we need, those of us who aren't doctors, don't have the time to be knowledgeable about medicine, and don't want to bother a doctor every time we have a minor complaint. I sprained my ankle in mid-December chasing an errant kitty and experienced severe pain and stiffness which lasted approximately two weeks. The ankle is still not back to optimum condition; particularly when I point the toes or on the very rare occasions when I wear heeled shoes which force the foot to extend, there is some soreness. This has occurred before, so I suspect that time is really all that is needed, but sprains do take a LONG time to heal fully.
