[net.med] Soy allergy

tna@tikal.UUCP (Tom Anderson) (02/20/86)

My six month old daughter lives almost exclusively on breast
milk, but last week my wife gave her a couple ounces of soy
based formula and she had a violent reaction. She vomited it all
up a few hours later and was unable to keep down breast milk,
too. She had blood in her stool and became severly dehydrated.
About 12 hours later she was able to keep down pedalyte (infant
gatoraid) and so was out of danger.

It would appear that she is allergic to soy, and I am wondering
if anyone out there has had experiences with such. Questions I
have include:

	1. What is the probability of her growing out of it?

	2. Are all forms of soy equally bad? For example, soy
oil is extremely popular in commercially prepared
food stuffs, is it as bad as other soy byproducts?

	3. What about eating meat that was raised on soy?

Any help would be appreciated.

I can imagine the fun we will have cooking in the future. My
wife eats everthing; I eat no meat or dairy products (but a fair
amount of soy); and if my daughter eats no soy, it will be
challenge to cook something that satisfies all of us.
