I'm not a doctor nor a med student, but I'm recovering from a Grade II
sprain of my left thumb. (BTW don't you sprain joints, i.e. ankle,
knee, thumb, etc. and not muscles?) My doctor recommended ice for
24-48 hours or until the swelling subsided. After that wet heat to 
promote blood circulation and healing.
