The recent discussion about calcium prompts this question. I always read that your body does not properly absorb calcium and use it efficiently unless it is accompanied by about half as much magnesium. And that the best natural source of this combination is Dolomite. Recently I've read reports that they are finding lead in Dolomite. My fathers doctor recommended that he supplement his diet with calcium. He recommended 3 500 milligram tablets of Os-Cal per day. Os-Cal contains Vitamin D as well as calcium, but not magnesium. As I stated in a previous posting, I take a daily calcium supplement for leg cramps. I always took Dolomite, but switched to Os-Cal since the doc recommended it for my Dad and he is staying with me for the winter. Has anyone out there heard of further studies stating that you don't need the magnesium? Or should we be taking a magnesium supplement with the Os-Cal? Incidently, we aren't taking Os-Cal. K-Mart sells a generic K-Mart brand of almost everything. For example they sell MyaMulti. It contains the same amount of each vitamin as MyaDec does, at about 1/3 the cost. They also sell an Os-Cal substitue that is 1/3 the cost of Os-Cal. Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with the manufacturers of Os-Cal, the K-Mart chain, or the oysters that give their life for the manufacture of oyster shell calcium supplements. I'm certainly not a doctor and this should not be construed as medical advise. I rarely have time to read Prevention!
