[net.graphics] What are the Graphics Standards?

Could someone please post a short note explaining what graphics standards
are available?  I am a heavy graphics user but really try to keep my fingers
out of the internals so that I can spend more time on the stuff that I get
paid for.

Things I would be interested in are the typical price range, user interface
philosophy and types of devices.  I right now I have no idea of the big
differences between, for example, GKS and the core standard.
