[net.graphics] request for information on graphic standards

brucec@orca.UUCP (Bruce Cohen) (01/15/84)

I am doing some research for an article (or a series of articles, maybe even
a book; depends on how much information I can get) on the history, present
status, and probable future directions of graphics standards. I'd like to
hear about any or all of the following:

anecdotes on the standards efforts, both in the U.S. and in Europe.

internal standards developed by organizations other than standards
agencies, either for internal or external use.

individual or organizational experiences with implementing and
interpreting standards, especially Core and GKS (most especially I want to
hear from people working with GKS).

Opinions about future standards directions (no flames please; I'm
interested in reasoned discussion).

I'm interested in videotex standards as well as traditional graphics.

One thing I am not interested in at this time is tutorial or descriptive
information on the existing official standards (Core, GKS, VDM, NAPLPS, et.
al.). I was a voting representative to ANSI X3H3 Computer Graphics and
liason to X3L2 Character Codes (including NAPLPS), so I have some knowledge
in that area.

I will of course credit anyone who sends me information in any publications.
I will not promise to use any particular piece of information, and I will not
use (or not attribute, your choice) anything marked as "off the record."
Commercial organizations are welcome to send marketing or technical
information, as I would like to be able to list suppliers of standard
implementations.

Please mail responses to me at one of the addresses below, rather than clog
up the news. If enough ( >5 perhaps) people request it, I will advise this
newsgroup of the publication of anything that comes out of this research.
