Can anyone tell me if there is any work going on to extend the GKS standard to 3-d? Sorry if this may have been previously discussed, I'm new to this game. Mark Schmid ...seismo!umcp-cs!aplvax!mes

There are two active projects to develop 3-D standards compatible with GKS which I know about. NNI (the Dutch national standards organization) is working on a single-level-segment 3-D GKS extension. The schedule I have here calls for a first draft to be published in Dec. '83, but I don't know if this occurred. The second draft, following comments from the members of the ISO (International Standards Organization) working group on GKS (TC97/WG2, if that means anything to you), is due in May, 1984. A more complex interface is being developed in the US by the ANSI X3H31 task group. This standard, called PHIGS (Programmers' Hierarchical Interface to Graphic Systems, as I recall), includes 3-D and hierarchical graphic structure extensions, as well as raster and intelligent graphics device capabilities. The parent technical committee, X3H3, has required that this standard differ from GKS compatibility only where required to support the user community the standard addresses: highly interactive and complexly- structured graphics as in solid modelling and Mechanical Engineering CAD. The PHIGS proposal will be forwarded to ISO for consideration as an international standard. The current schedule calls for a ballot on the draft proposal by X3H3 in March of 1984.
