[net.music] Poll Results For Most Valuable Record

jcjeff@ihlpg.UUCP (jeffreys) (03/24/85)

some people :-) ) list of most valuable
records. I hereby thank all of you who participated, and am pleased that the
replies were (as I had asked) by mail, and not posted to the net.
The point of the original posting was to ask if people had a valuable record
which had a known dollar value. The replies turned out to be more of a "I have
a valuable record, but these are rare records as well" kind of list.
Entering into the spirit of the thing, I have decided to include these as
well, along with the comments that were made about some of them.
I will admit that coming from England, there are many bands in this list that
I have not heard of, and I expect that if some of these records are so *rare*
that not many of you will have heard of them either!!!!!!
I will do my best to split this list into two parts, part one consisting of
records which have some dollar value, and the other part will contain a list
of *rare* records

From Dave Axler

> Richard,
> Trying to decide which of my records is the most valuable is a tough
> job. I was a disk jockey during the '68-'76 period,

I worked with three mobile discos in England, over a nine (beat you by one!)
year period '70-'79. ( sorry Dave, could not resist that :-) --rj-- )

> The three-album set issued in '69 (?) as a spinoff of the Glastonbury Fayre
> rock festival in England, still in its original plastic bag with all the
> little accessories (build-it-yourself pyramid stage, etc.). An incredible
> collection of material, incl. a side of "Dark Star" from the Wembley Pool
> concerts that the Dead didn't put on the tour album, 35 minutes of live
> Gong, live material from Edgar Broughton, the Pink Fairies, Hawkwind, and
> assorted others of the period plus donated studio cuts from the likes of
> Bowie and Townshend. {Now that I think about it, the date on this one is
> probably '71 or '72, since that's when the Dead's tour album came out...}
>
> An original copy of It's a Beautiful Day's first album.
>
> First (and, often, only) pressings of initial albums by groups that are
> totally unknown today. For instance, that of The Mandrake Memorial, a fine
> mid-sixties keyboard/synth band best remembered as the home of Craig
> Anderton, who's now known as an expert writer on musical electronics.
>
> Or the only album ever issued by the Edison Electric Band, another Philly
> local group. After this band broke up, Dave Mason got the keyboard player,
> Bonnie Raitt got the bass player, the guitarist went on tour w/Sly & the
> Family, and the drummer went somewhere else...
>
> Then, there's singles. There are singles in my collection that I'm
> certain are collector's items. Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth doing "Down So
> Low," for example, or the "Tubular Bells" single that Oldfield made when
> 'The Exorcist' finally made his music popular.
>
> I could go on, but what would be the point? Owning valuable albums, like
> owning almost anything else that isn't worthless, is more of a pain than a
> pleasure. It's too easy to get sucked into the trap of collectorship, where
> you claim to love the music but won't play the album lest it get worn. And,
> more often than not, owning a valuable album simply means that you happened
> to make a tasteful but unpopular purchase when the album wasn't valuable --
> that's not something worth being proud of, to my mind.

From Eli Messinger

> The idea of "value" has so many interpretations... as far as a
> "book" value goes (i.e. some guide like Osborne's book), I'd
> guess that the first mentioned LP below (butcher cover Beatles'
> ``Yesterday and Today'') is the most "valuable." In the condi-
> tion it's in I'd say it's worth somewhere around $100-$200.
> Depends where (geographically) you sell it.
>
> I thought I'd also send you a laundry list of some of the collec-
> tible discs in my collection. Valuable to those who want them--
> due to their rarity in most cases--but not necessarily in high
