[] Last week, we had a discussion with a member of the Goddard Space Telescope effort [They are not on the net because they went with VMS.]. Anyway, We would be interested in hearing from anyone on cheap image processing systems (perhaps using 68K as a minimum). Some telescope images might be 4 MBs in size minimum. We have a project at Ames called MIDAS for LANDSAT imagery using Xenix, SUN motherboards (68K) and Raster Tech frame buffers only costing us $50K, but we are seeking $20K. [They use the 80MB Fujitsu disk.] This is an inhouse effort, not a product. I am aware of a similar experiment at TRW in Redondo Beach, CA and an NIH effort. Our general opinion was that nothing was out there yet, and that even VAX780s would be on the slow side. They cannot afford a Cray or Cyber. Any other suggestions or people with similar interests would be interested. I will not repost. --eugene miya NASA Ames Research Center Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science {hao, hplabs, dual}!ames!riacs!eugene eugene@riacs.ARPA
