[net.graphics] Graphics hardcopy summary

piety@hplabs.UUCP (Bob Piety) (11/13/84)

A summary of graphics hardcopy device I have received follows. Many thanks
to all who sent information.

One of the lesser expensive RGB cameras is from Celtic Technology,
Woodland Hills, CA 818-884-6767. Its output is on 35 mm film.

... Not knowing your full needs, would something as simple as
the DSCAN color output device produced by Seiko be sufficient?

Polariod Palette	$1500 Polaroid (800)225-1618
This is a little CRT in a box that feeds directly from the video
board in several micros, It can be used to go to 35mm (possibly
larger formats as an option) I don't beleive the cameras are pin
	registered.

Lang Video Slide System 35	~ $3000 [ CAN'T FIND THEIR PHONE #]
This is a device that attaches to the RGB/SYNC out from a monitor.
It also has an internal CRT and color filters for doing color.
This is 35mm with 4x5 and maybe 8x10 options. I also think
it has an adapter for 16mm movie camera.

There are several manufacturers in this category, Matrix
is the only that comes to mind presently

Matrix QCR 4/2 Matrix (201)767-1750
			$6000 - 12000
This is a little different technology. It has an internal CRT
and filters, but it does NOT feed from video signals.
Instead, it sits on a Q-Bus/Unibus, etc. and you feed it
digital pixel data directly. The CRT paints a single scan line at a
time. You get much higher resolution on this type of device.
For $6k you get a 2048 line res recorder.
For the 12K you get 2k/4k resolution option.
It comes standard with 35mm Konica camera, but has a pin registered
	option (Marron-Carrel) 4x5 and 8x10 options.

This is a good camera for the price, I have used one quite
        extensitvely since last spring.

I believe in this category are the Dunn cameras.

Celco	?? CELCO (201)327-1123
I don't know too much about them, they have recorders (very fast)
        for raster and vector data.

Dicomed	D48	$125k- ??

Like Celco they have color and B/w film recorders, 32k res for vector
and 8k res for rasters data. This technology is very similar to
the Matrix camera, however, there is much more hardware to correct
	for geometric, optical, etc. distortions.

[LASERGRAPHICS: CAN'T FIND THEIR NUMBER]
As for paper output, I am just barely familair with a company called
LaserGraphics. They OEM several types of graphics devices along with a
box they make. The box sits between the host and the graphics device
doing some of the dirty work, but mostly providing a homogenous
interface for several different types of graphics hardcopy.

They have a color printer (raster) that works quite well.

PRINTRONIX (714)863-1900
There are also companies like Printronix, et.al. that market line printers
with color raster capabilities, but I have not used these so can't
say too much about them.
