As I've said before, I'm not in favor of creating subgroups for discussions of specific genres/bands/styles. However, I would like (with tongue only partly in cheek) to propose the formation of net.music.net.music.dead, in which the pros and cons of founding a Grateful Dead subgroup can be argued, without distracting the rest of us from reading about the doings and/or music of the band itself. But seriously, folks . . . at many sites, all this stuff is re-merged anyway upon arrival into a single bulletin board, and the whole business about subgroup formation is nothing more than an annoyance to those of us at such locations. The only thing about subgroups that really matters at my site is that, if the material is (even vaguely) of interest/relevance to our users, then I, as "postmaster" have to notify the new administrator of our address just to make sure that the re-merging will occur. Big deal. It's certainly not such a critical issue that it needed almost 25% of this list for discussion. There's been more material about the Dead's subgroup than about the band, by far. That, to me, is proof that the subgroup isn't as necessary as people think, but it would cheer some readers up to have that special cachet, to know that their personal favorite band has its own private list. Me, I couldn't care less, as long as I still get to read the messages; I doubt that the Dead would care, either!
