I have been trying to learn something about the "early days" of
computer graphics. A fairly quick litterature survey produced the following :
* "A Brief, personal History of Computer Graphics", C. Machover , Computer ,
Nov. 1978 ,
concentrating mainly on display hardware.
* "Computer aids to design and architecture" edited by N. Negroponte ,
contains recollections from a number of pioneers.
* I.E. Sutherland's doctoral dissertation on Sketchpad ,
laid many of the foundations of graphics software.
* "Computer Displays" I.E. Sutherland , Scientific American, June 1970 ,
describes state of the art at that time.
* "A characterization of 10 hidden surface algorithms" by Schumacker ,
Sutherland and Sproull , Computing Surveys , vol.6 , no.1 .
As far as I can tell a comprehensive history of computer graphics, or something
remotely approaching it does not currently exist . I would appreciate pointers
to anything I've missed. One interesting question : who first used a raster
display to produce what would now be considered computer graphics ( as opposed
to characters or simply showing what is in core) ?
Comments by those of you who have been out there long enough to have something
interesting (appropriate?) to say , are welcome ...
