[net.graphics] Frame Grabbers/Hardware

jeffj@masscomp.UUCP (Jeff Jones) (04/30/85)

I have become interested in the video h'ware aspects of graphics lately.
It seems that this area is rarely discussed in this newsgroup, but I have a
question that someone in this group may be able to answer.

My interests are in the area of video controller hardware, specifically
frame grabbers, and video controllers that have the ability to digitize an
image, enhance it (add text/graphics), and then output the image in a single
scan cycle (1/30 of a second). Video tape controllers, and (maybe someday)
video disc controllers also seem interesting.

What I would like to know is whether there are any good books on the subject.
Also, are there any magazines on the subject? What are the trade magazines
in Television Graphics? (If there are such things).

Responses may be sent to me via mail. If enough responses are recieved I
will compile a summary and post it to the net.

Thanks in advance!

There are numerous texts on the image processing aspects of using
a "frame grabber". As far a trade publications, "Electronic Imaging" -was-
the monthly magazine to read. It has been merged into "Digital Design".
On the cover of the June "Digital Design" is a VME based image processor
that does 100 million multiply-accumulates/second to 20-bits precision!
This is the hardware that that real-time image processing is made of.

Yes, I would love to hear more talk about/with image acquisition
and processing, instead of just display intensive graphics. I'm interested
in discussing different scene segmentation techniques. Anybody written
C code for the SRI connectivity algorithms? etc etc
