The Computer Aided Design/Interactive Graphics (CADIG) Group at the U. S. Naval Academy is recruiting for a GS-7/9/11 computer specialist. The purpose of the department is to apply computer graphics and CAD/CAM techniques to undergraduate engineering courses in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical and Naval System Engineering. The graphics hardware consists of: 4 Evans and Sutherland PS300 on a VAX-11/780 running UNIX 4.2 Ikonas color frame buffer on a VAX-11/780 running UNIX 4.2 Various Tektronix gear (4050 series desktops and 4014 terminals) An 85"x55" flatbed plotter 2 PDP-11/55's running UNIX V7 and Berkeley 2.9 Imagen laser printer, Matrix color camera 4 Additional PS300 CSM (color vector) display to be delivered September 1985 Gould 6000 series computer running UNIX 4.2 to be delivered fall 1985 Equipment budget for next five years expected to be approx. $250k/year Projects currently under way include Ethernet between UNIX machines, 2D and 2D mechanical part design with direct milling machine control, ship hull design using 3D surfaces, and computer graphics research for engineering applications. Knowledge of the fundamentals of computer graphics is desired. The software responsibilities include graphics application and system software development. The primary area for this position is to develop raster graphics algorithms such as ray tracing, etc. The primary language is C, but knowledge of Fortran IV, f77 and BASIC is also needed. he position requires working with faculty members and students to provide programming assistance. This assistance ranges from answering questions to developing major programming projects applying interactive graphics to engineering problems. The job is a full-time U. S. Civil Service position. The department is all civilian consisting of a faculty director, one electronics engineer, one electronics technician, and three computer specialists. This position is to fill an additional vacant software position. The salary range is from 17K to 26.3K.
