[net.graphics] Summary of responses on video hardware for VAX/UNIX

tjt@twitch.UUCP ( T.J.Thompson) (10/08/85)

Enclosed is a summary of the 2 messages I got in response to my recent query
about hardware for capturing and processing video on a VAX under UNIX.

At Waterloo we use the IKONAS RDS-3000 (now made by Adage). It works
well for graphical output and also performs a real time frame grabber
function. It allows you to plug in bipolar micro-programmable processors
to do graphical I/O, and they support a 68k board. We have ported
Harmony (a real time message passing O/S) to the box, as well as writing
a C compiler for the bit slice. It's a nice development environment but
it might be a little pricy for your needs.

Datacube Inc. (4 Dearborn Rd. Peabody, Ma 01960 617-535-6644)
manufactures a variety of frame grabbers and image processing
hardware. Included is a family of boards that can be configured as a
subsystem on the Q-bus or Multibus as a 768 x 512 x 24 bit frame
store, 8 bit real time digitization, real time ALU type operations on
8 or 16 bit data. You can connect it to a VAX with either a Unibus to
Q-bus adapter or a DR-11W port (this has just been developed).
They also make a family of VME bus based ultra powerful low cost image
processing boards.
