Help! I have been asked to look into the the purchase of an AT and the Professional Graphics Adapter/Monitor. Before I recommend spending the kind of money IBM is charging, I've got a couple questions I'd like know the answers to. 1. What problems might I face just doing regular things like editing files and compiling under DOS? under XENIX (past and present problems with the EGA prompt this question). Are there any particular (dis)advantages in choosing one operating system over the other (other than the usual MSDOS vs UNIX stuff)? 2. What is the Graphics Development Toolkit which IBM markets distinctly from their GKS package? 3. What level does the GKS package support? Does it come with bindings for any of the popular DOS 'C' compilers? If so, which ones and which is the best? 4. Will the PGA and Monitor run in any of the good AT clones around such as the Compaq and the Zenith? 5. How much RAM is required to do GKS graphics development effectively? 6. Is floating point hardware required(very desirable) for GKS development? (Is the 287 available yet?) 7. Can the PGA drive a monchrome monitor at the same time as the PG Monitor? If not, can a monchrome or ordinary color card be used at the same time as the PGA? 8. Should I bother buying an AT hard drive from IBM or should I just go to the aftermarket? -- Regards, George Hart, Computer X Canada Ltd.
