(Brief Followup to Dave Martindale's posting) The Dicomed that Dave referred to in which the black paint flaked onto the crt face is (I think) not an isolated instance. When this was first discovered we were using that Dicomed (not ours, one we have access to) for plotting images of molecules produced with Nelson Max's softare (ATOMSLLL & DNI). When I showed Nelson the pictures, they had black spots in them, which I suggested were probably phosphor burns. He said "oh no, they're just paint flakes that dropped on the crt, we had them on our Dicomed until I blew them away with an air gun."
