Dave Straayer gave a very appropriate answer to Steve Ward: there is no standard GKS device driver. BUT CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile), a subset (because it is not interactive) of CGI (Computer Graphics Interface), would be the best bet for a long term investment in development. Even the lowest GKS level requires the metafile, and even though it is not specified in the standard that it should be in CGM format, the sensible implementations of GKS will use it. Because it is a standard, and because it will be implemented in several graphics chips (IBM, Motorola, etc...) Steve, as you are working in the Astronomy field, I can point you to a well documented GKS you may easily access to: we got from Starlink a GKS 1B, which is good. And I've already written 2 drivers for it: the Selanar terminal series, and the QMS Laser printer series. There are also previously written drivers in there (Tektronix, Pericom, Versatec, Zeta).
