JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN USER INTERFACES AT&T Bell Laboratories has several open positions in user interface design and testing. These openings are for Members of Technical Staff, and the following characterstics are desirable in applicants: + a Ph.D in Cognitive, Experimental, or Human Factors Psychology (although a master's degree will also be considered). + knowledge of computing (preferably within an UNIX/C environment), human factors, experimental methods, instructional design and technology, computer-based graphics. Salary will be based on experience and education; benefits are excellent. Positions are available in the areas of: 1. Exploratory Tool Support Development. Job Objective: Design, prototype, and test tools for developing state-of-the-art user interfaces, particularily involving expert systems and/or interactive graphics. Skills/Experience: Experience with software tools for building user interfaces and designing expert system and workstation applications is desired. A general background in human factors engineering of software-based systems is also preferred. Candidate should have the ability to work closely with other systems engineers to define customer control capabilities and system objectives, and should have strong programming skills and familiarity with state-of- the-art user interface technology. 2. Network Interface Design. Job Objective: Design and test user interfaces for new telecommunications services. Activities may include: + analysis of customer needs, + designing tasks and service representations to meet customer needs, + conducting laboratory studies of new user interface designs, + writing high-level requirements for user interfaces for specific telecommunications services, + evaluating detailed design concepts related to the requirements, + studying new technologies for user interface applications, + working with system engineering, marketing, and development organizations in AT&T Communications. Skills/Experience: Experience in human factors engineering of software-based systems. Ability to work closely with other systems engineers to define customer control capabilities and system objectives. Knowledge of experimental design. Also desirable are familiarity with state-of-the-art technology, programming skills, and market research methods.
