Recently, I have been thinking about the problem of recieving messages from background processes. Popping a window, as our newman.ml does, is too annoying. Printing a message to the minibuffer is 1) too confining and 2) prone to being missed when it just flickers by (I usually run time.ml which often knocks messages from the minibuffer). What I would like could take the form of 1) a minibuffer in which you could move back to previous lines (thus a multi-line mini-buffer might interact like shell.ml does) allowing you to keep a few lines on the screen, some of which might contain messages or 2) the ability to set up a buffer/window that is not clobbered by delete-other-windows or pop-to-buffer (one might use its mode line to tell the user how many lines are below the bottom line visible on the screen). Are either of these feasible modifications of Gosling Emacs? --------------------------------------------------- BOB (in transit)
