[net.music] CBS holds our music ransom

In my quest to find the Talking Heads - "Stop Making Sense" CD I found
this little bit of info from the owner of Rochester's - Record
Archive. He told me that the Indiana plant is running full capacity
pumping out CD's on the Columbia label. Now it seems that the same
plant had contracted out to produce other labels as well. Well
wonderful CBS is putting out almost 100% CBS labels and have deleted
any back-orders that record stores have outstanding. The only thing
stores can buy are things off their shelf.

So if the music you like is not Columbia you are going to be SOL for a few
months until CBS gets tired of pumping out Bob Dylan CD's. The whole thing
kinda reeks!!

On the brighter side, the owner of the 'Archive has been getting some real
great import materials at about a buck premium, but a lot of interesting things
to any "new music" fans. He has a big selection of Roxy Music, Depeche Mode,
Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, Tears for Fears (of course it comes in a week
after I buy the album), etc, etc.

In some of my searches for various CD's I have also heard this (I think from
one of the Laury's salesmen). Supposedly this got a lot of press in the
trade magazines about 4-6 weeks ago. I have also heard (and I forget the
source) that the CBS/Sony CD plant in Indiania is having severe quality
control problems and at least at one point was throwing away 70% of their
production due to manufacturing defects. Does anyone out in netland have any
further details or references?
