I wonder if this could be related to the fact that Gosling ignored any information in termcap on whether or not the terminal had the magic cookie glitch (and how bad it was). I ran into this on a teleray 10, where Emacs inserted extra spaces in the mode line. When I asked Gosling about it, he said that he had ignored magic cookie problems so as to discourage people from buying brain-damaged terminals. *sigh* <mike

I have a mod to Gosling's emacs for a Teleray T1061 (magic cookie glitch) which does the best it can to give you at least a highlighted mode line. If anyone is interested I can send it. P.S. It ain't perfect. Sometimes it seems to forget where it's at. May be a function of the redisplay algorithm.
