	Here are the lines out of my .emacs_init file that do the trick
for me.  You didn't specify which flavor of Emacs you were talking about.
Displaying line numbers is a mode in "ITS Emacs"--which is what I'm
setting below.  I haven't found a way to do it in Gosling's Emacs either.

	Incidentally, I used "followup" rather than "respond" for two
reasons:

	1.  I thought others might find it useful.
	
	2.  Every time I type "r" all I get is
	    "readnews:  Bus error -- Core dumped"
