[Forgive me, brothers, but I like TECO] I am an absolute novice with EMACS, and have a little problem understanding my way around it. A few questions: How do you execute the 'defun' function? The manual I have shows a number of examples of user-defined MLisp functions (that's still a mystery to me in itself!), but says only 'execute defun'. The only way I know of to execute anything not bound to keys is with the ESC-x sequence, which only allows a single line command. Where to from there? Next question: If I wish to do any iterative functions (example: add a single, constant, character to the beginnings of several lines, requiring manually <character>, ^N (next line), ^A (to beginning of line), is there a way to do this other than defining an MLisp function to do it? Any help will be enormously appreciated. -- [ ] [ I am not a stranger, but a friend you haven't met yet ] [ ] Ray Simard Loral Instrumentation, San Diego {ucbvax, ittvax!dcdwest}!sdcsvax!sdccsu3!loral!simard

[emacs the knife] Thanks to everyone who took time to answer my usage questions. Some mail replies were returned by the mail system (I still don't quite understand why). -- [ ] [ I am not a stranger, but a friend you haven't met yet ] [ ] Ray Simard Loral Instrumentation, San Diego {ucbvax, ittvax!dcdwest}!sdcsvax!sdccsu3!loral!simard
